The CyberPeace Institute, an independent non-governmental organization (NGO), launched Sept. 26 with the mission to “assist vulnerable communities, promote transparency, and advance global discussions on acceptable behavior in cyberspace.” In a statement, the Institute said it will focus on three primary functions: coordinating recovery efforts for vulnerable victims of cyberattacks and helping vulnerable communities and organizations harden their defenses against attacks; facilitating analysis, research, and investigations of cyberattacks; and promoting “positive and responsible behavior in cyberspace” by reinforcing adherence to international laws and regulations. Stéphane Duguin, currently head of the EU Internet Referral Unit within Europol, will serve as the Institute’s CEO. Marietje Schaake, recent member of European Parliament, will serve as its president and chair of the Advisory Board. The Institute’s initial funders include Microsoft and the Hewlett Foundation.
