Joseph Cuffari, the Trump administration’s nominee to become Department of Homeland Security inspector general, told senators at his confirmation hearing today that he doesn’t have any experience in election security issues, but is ready to dive in.
At today’s Senate Homeland Security Committee confirmation hearing, Sen James Lankford, R-Okla., asked Cuffari if he had election security background, and also asked if Cuffari would work to maintain the relationships DHS has built with state-level election officials to help the agency monitor election security.
“What I need to hear is, you’re going to stay engaged on things like making sure there are security clearances in states, so that if there is a problem there’s somebody in the state to be able to [have] rapid conversation with,” Lankford said.
Cuffari, despite his stated lack of experience on the matter, said he would not have issues approaching the matter.
