The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) deployed the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) system at three VA hospitals in Indiana on Aug. 22 as the agency continues deployments under its Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) program.
In an Aug. 24 press release, the VA said it deployed the system at Fort Wayne VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Fort Wayne, Ind.; Marion VAMC in Marion, Ind.; and Richard L. Roudebush VAMC in Indianapolis. VA also deployed the system at 16 clinics associated with those medical centers throughout Indiana.
“VA has now deployed this modern EHR system at 11 hospitals in 2026 – nearly doubling the number of deployments seen in the previous five years,” said VA Deputy Secretary Paul Lawrence. “The Trump administration is committed to ensuring every medical facility across VA has this critical system by 2031 to improve experiences for both veterans and VA employees.”
The latest rollout in Indiana means that more than 102,000 veterans and 6,000 staff will now have access to the Federal EHR. The new system aims to provide a seamless transfer of military health records among the VA, Department of Defense, and other federal partners.
Next, the VA plans to deploy the system on Oct. 24 at the Alaska VA Healthcare System in Anchorage and Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC in Cleveland.
In 2027, the VA plans to deploy the system to 26 sites across Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Missouri. The agency has yet to publicly release a deployment schedule beyond 2027.
VA Press Secretary Quinn Slaven told MeriTalk on Aug. 24 that the EHRM program is “back on track” after the nearly two-year pause in deployments. The department halted deployments in 2023 alongside contractor Oracle Health after users raised concerns at early deployment sites.
“Between early April and early June 2026, VA more than doubled the number of VAMCs using the Federal EHR – from six to 14 – and nearly tripled the number of VA clinics – from 26 to 75,” Slaven said. “VA has made more than 13,000 EHR improvements enhancing performance, usability, and capabilities.”
Slaven added that the system has had zero outages in the past 12 months.
