NSF Workshop Aims at Using AI to Boost Spectrum Capabilities

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced it will hold a workshop next month that will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) applications to improve wireless spectrum efficiencies.

In a Federal Register notice, NSF asserted that wireless spectrum management and use have been largely manual exercises, and often “sub-optimal and rigid, preventing efficient use.” As the U.S. looks to develop and deploy 5G technologies, NSF said that accelerating wireless spectrum policy-making and management is critical, and that AI can help in that endeavor.

The workshop – which will take place Aug. 28 both via webcast and on-site at the Griffiss Institute Center for Information Assurance in Rome, N.Y. – seeks to “identify areas where artificial intelligence techniques can help increase efficiency of wireless spectrum use; and discuss ongoing efforts in federal, industrial and academic domains to utilize AI techniques in the wireless spectrum domain.”
