Atlantic Council Urges 5G National Strategy, Cites National Security

The Atlantic Council recommends accelerating a whole-of-government approach to developing a long-term national spectrum strategy which will include creating an inter-spectrum for 5G that will allow for Federal, state, and local policy synchronization of policies and procedures to rapidly and cost-effectively implement 5G.

The memo, released yesterday, listed various recommendations for the United States to trump China as the world leader in 5G technology. Subsidies from the Chinese Communist Party allow Chinese companies like Huawei and ZTE to undercut competition with lower pricing. The Atlantic Council states that allowing China to be the world leader in 5G would become a threat to national security.

According to the Atlantic Council, the United States should begin launching a campaign to inform the public about the benefits of 5G for the economy and national security. They also believe that in order to reduce China’s advantages from its state-led approach, that the United States should streamline its regulations and procurement practices while reducing impediments for 5G and Internet of Things.

The memo also recommends that the United States and its allies should halt work with Chinese technology companies that are developing a 5G infrastructure and to “strictly enforce new Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States and related legislation to carefully screen adversarial acquisition of emerging technologies and applications from U.S. start-ups and smaller businesses.”
