Department of Defense cybersecurity veteran Maj. Gen. Neil Hersey has been named the new deputy commanding general for Operations at Army Cyber Command. He transitioned to the role in June, after two years as commanding general at the Army Cyber Center of Excellence in Fort Gordon, Ga., according to his bio.

At Army Cyber Command, Hersey will be part of a unit responsible for both defensive and offensive cyber capabilities, and that functions as the Army’s outpost within the United States Cyber Command (CYBERCOM) unit. Hersey has experience with both Army and CYBERCOM.

Hersey rose through the ranks in Army’s cyber divisions, and prior to the two-year stint as commanding general at the Army Cyber Center of Excellence, he spent time as the deputy commanding general the then the commandant for the Army Cyber School.

Hersey has also served as intelligence chief for the United States Army Europe and Africa, the director of Aviation and Air Sensors at Army Intelligence and Command, and an aviation and intelligence officer for cyber warfare.

The general also served stints as the director of operations on the Cyber National Mission and Joint Task Force at CYBERCOM and was the deputy director of Operations at the United States Central Command.
