The Department of Defense’s Inspector General (DoD IG) is taking a look at how the Pentagon is handling apparent evidence of Unexplained Aerial Phenomena (UAP) – or what are more commonly referred to as unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
According to a May 3 DoD IG memo, the inspector general’s evaluation will include the Offices of the Secretary of Defense, Military Services, Combatant Commands, Combat Support Agencies, Defense Agencies, and the Military Criminal Investigative Organizations.
The evaluation will seek to “determine the extent to which the DoD has taken actions regarding Unidentified Aerial Phenomena,” the memo says.
News of the IG’s work comes after DoD confirmed last week that three videos of UAPs/UFOs, were in fact legitimate sightings captured on video by the United States Navy.
Last August, DoD established the UAP Task Force to improve its understanding of UAP and where they may originate from, as well as to detect, catalog, and analyze any UAPs that could pose a national security threat. That task force is being led by the Navy.
The memo gives no estimated timetable for completion but says DoD IG expects to begin this month.
