FCC Seeks Comment on Broadband Data Collection Order

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is seeking comment on a report, order, and further notice of proposed rulemaking dealing with the accuracy and usefulness of its Digital Opportunity Data Collection (DODC) that aims to more accurately determine residential and small business locations in the U.S. that do not have access to broadband services. Specifically, the agency’s further notice of proposed rulemaking “seeks comment on ways to develop location-specific data that could be used in conjunction with the polygon-based data in the new collection to precisely identify” homes and businesses lacking broadband service access. The FCC is also seeking comment, with respect to mobile wireless service coverage, about how to align the DODC “with changes in mobile broadband deployment technology, markets, and policy needs.” Finally, the agency is seeking comment on how to “improve satellite broadband data given the unique characteristics of satellites.” The FCC will formally publish its call for comment in the Federal Register on August 22.
