The Department of Defense (DoD) plans to centralize the recruiting databases of its service branches into one system for cybersecurity and reduced duplication, according to a notice set to be posted on the Federal Register on October 16.
The notice centers on the Joint Advertising, Market Research & Studies (JAMRS) Recruiting Database and modifying it to centralize the development and maintenance from the service branches to the Pentagon. The system collects information on young people for the purpose of recruiting them to the military, which requires the purchase of outside data.
The consolidation will allow DoD to reduce duplicative purchases of data, better protect the data from cyberattacks, and quickly remove individuals who request to be removed from mailing lists or who enlist in a service branch. The system is also accessible the Department of Homeland Security for the Coast Guard, law enforcement authorities, and members of Congress.
The notice emphasizes the security around the system, touting improved information assurance.
“Access to information in the database is highly restricted and limited to those that require the records in the performance of their official duties. The database utilizes a layered approach of overlapping controls, monitoring and authentication to ensure overall security of the data, network and system resources,” the notice states.
