The White House on Tuesday gathered together more than a dozen Federal leaders across the government for its inaugural AI Council meeting.

The White House AI Council – created by President Biden’s recent AI executive order – met on Dec. 12 to discuss implementation of the tasks and directives from the landmark executive order.

“Conversation topics included the new U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, efforts to bring talent and expertise into government, safety testing for new models, efforts to prevent fraud and deception, protections against bias and discrimination, maximizing benefits to workers, and privacy,” a White House official said in an emailed statement.

During the meeting, the AI Council also received a classified intelligence briefing from President Biden’s national security team to discuss the international dimensions and capabilities of artificial intelligence.

The group features cabinet members including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, and Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

Other attendees included Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Arati Prabhakar, Director of the Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su, Administrator of the Small Business Administration Isabel Guzman, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed, and Chair of the United States Council of Economic Advisers Jared Bernstein.

According to the official, the White House AI Council will meet on a regular basis.

“The Biden-Harris Administration will continue to work with allies and partners abroad on a strong international framework to govern the development and use of AI, and the Administration will continue to work with Congress to pursue bipartisan legislation to help America lead the way in responsible innovation,” the White House official said.
