Ed Kearns

Ed Kearns is the interim Chief Data Officer for the U.S. Department of Commerce, overseeing governance and management of its data assets.  As NOAA’s first Chief Data Officer (2017), he has developed strategies and practices for NOAA’s data assets. Ed promotes federal data through new partnerships and technologies, such as the NOAA Big Data Project. He has recently helped develop the White House’s new Federal Data Strategy. Previously, Ed led satellite data and archive activities for NOAA; guided Everglades restoration projects for the National Park Service; and developed NASA satellite products as a professor at the University of Miami. He earned a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from URI and a B.S. in Physics and Marine Science from the University of Miami.
