The Department of Defense (DoD) on Jan. 19 selected Smartronix to provide on-premises cloud services.

Smartronix is a global IT and engineering company based in Hollywood, Md. This contract is part of the National Institutes of Health Information Technology Acquisition and Assessment Center’s $20 billion CIO-SP3 governmentwide acquisition contract. It is different from the U.S. Army’s contract enlisting IBM build a private cloud data center, which was announced on Jan. 18.

Smartronix will work with Dell Technologies, including Dell EMC, Virtustream, and VMware, to provide on-site managed services (OMS) capable of hosting Impact-Level 4/5 (IL4/5) NIPRNet workloads from within DoD data centers. According to a press release from Smartronix, the partners will eventually include Impact Level 6 (IL6) (SIPRNet), eliminating the need for a Cloud Access Point (CAP).

Under the contract, Smartronix will also deliver Cloud Foundry, a platform for native cloud applications. The OMS contract will provide “true” consumption-based billing infrastructure as a service via the Virtustream platform, the press release said.

“We are excited to bring this game-changing, on-premises secure cloud capability to the DoD and mission partners. Smartronix’ s cloud success with commercial and Federal civilian clients is a direct result of our support of DOD enterprise network architecture, management, migration, and defense,” said John Parris, chief executive officer of Smartronix. “We are proud to have the opportunity to leverage best practices developed across our business base to provide ‘as-a-service’ offerings to the DOD.”
