The Data Center Download

Welcome to the fourth issue of the Data Center Download. As agencies work towards their data center consolidation goals, challenges are inevitable. Through our quarterly meeting discussions, we know that application rationalization, chargeback, electric metering, and the RoI of consolidation present many questions and can make consolidation seem even more daunting. We understand your concerns, which is why we're bringing more than 150 data center consolidation professionals together on June 19 for the Data Center Brainstorm to discuss these topics and more.

Keynote speaker, Col. Chris Miller, Chief Information Officer/G-6, Army Data Center Consolidation Program Director, U.S. Army joined us for our most recent quarterly meeting on April 26 and provided a sneak peek at what we can expect on June 19. The U.S. Army is currently in the application rationalization stage, working to identify more than 12,000 applications. It is working with senior leadership and leveraging an on-the-ground approach – meeting in-person with data center managers and application owners – to determine the importance and necessity of the data. Join us on Tuesday, June 19 to hear from the U.S. Army and Col. Miller on their experience and next steps in data center consolidation. Registration is complimentary to government attendees; industry rates apply. Details available at www.meritalk.com/datacenterbrainstorm.

 DCX Wiki Section

Join the discussion by providing your consolidation tips and tricks on the Data Center Exchange (DCX) Wikipedia. To support OMB's goals, DCX introduced the first Federal DCC Cookbook in October 2011. The Cookbook is designed to assist Federal agencies with their consolidation efforts, from start to finish. The Cookbook translates to a Wikipedia where government and industry representatives can contribute recipes, as well as DCC tips and tricks. See what's new on the Wiki:

  • Agency data center consolidation updates – Profiles on Los Alamos National Laboratory, U.S. Army, and U.S. Navy

  • FDCCI updates and information – Latest OMB memos and implementation guidelines, data center closings, and more

If you have any questions on how to use the DCX wiki, please contact Stephanie Majercik, smajercik@meritalk.com.
