Heidi Spann
Training Coordinator and Leadership Coach, U.S. Federal Election Commission

As a Training Coordinator and Leadership Coach for the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Heidi assesses the training and development needs of staff and creates programs and opportunities to meet those needs and build a high quality leadership cadre. Heidi entered into the Federal government as a Presidential Management Fellow and has worked in a number of Federal agencies on Human Capital initiatives that improve leadership and employee retention. She is currently focused on building a leadership development program for the Federal Election Commission and has recently partnered with the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) to create an Internal Coaching Alliance which brings leadership coaching to both small agencies. This coaching alliance between OTS and FEC allows employees from both agencies to receive coaching from certified coaches in either agency. Sharing resources within small agencies cuts costs, builds networks and, with this alliance, gives employees access to an emerging form of professional development. It is the hope that with this partnership, FEC and OTS will create a model that can be used with other small agencies and throughout the government as agencies are urged to become better stewards of tightening budgets. Heidi began coaching in 2005 at the Eastern Management Development Center where she integrated neuro-feedback and biofeedback within a leadership development curriculum to enhance leader performance. She is a graduate of the Georgetown Leadership Coaching program and has coached leaders and executives in the Department of Defense, Department of Army, National Corporation for Community Service and other Federal agencies and educational institutions. In a coaching relationship, Heidi builds a comfortable environment in which leaders feel encouraged to explore new opportunities and ways of being. Her style mixes goal setting and accountability with creative exercises designed to get leaders to shift their way of thinking and being. Heidi graduated with her Masters in Public Administration from Arizona State University and with her Bachelors in Social Work from University of Kansas. In her spare time Heidi enjoys cooking (and eating!), reading, traveling, and running with her dog, Marley.
