NESCC Takes on Multiple Roles Supporting NOAA's Climate Mission

An outside glance at the impressive NOAA NESCC facility.

Talk about multitasking.

The year-old National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) supercomputing center in W.Va. aims to improve weather and climate forecasting, play a strategic role in the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI), serve as a critical backup resource, and meet energy efficiency objectives.

The NOAA Environmental Security Computing Center (NESCC) takes on those tasks as a tenant of the I-79 Technology Park in Fairmont, W.Va. NESCC, which completed construction in October 2011, occupies about 54,000 square feet of the Robert H. Mollohan Research Center building in the technology park, which is owned by the West Virginia High Technology Consortium Foundation (WVHTF). The center was built with a $27.6 million investment obtained through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.

  • From Data Centers to Mega Centers
  • Mind the Gap - the Disconnect of Management, Metrics, and Mandates

In addition, DCX will announce the winners of the 2013 Optimize Data Center Awards which recognize data center consolidation programs and leaders and their accomplishments.

Know an innovator in consolidation? Don't let their efforts go unnoticed. Be sure to nominate the individual or agency for an Optimize Data Center Award by January 25, 2013.

Federal Agencies to Slash Number of Data Centers
December 19, 2012
E-Commerce Times
As technology improves, the federal government's need for numerous data centers decreases. The government has a plan for dealing with this change: the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative, which is expected to reduce the number of data centers it uses by about 40 percent.

Optimization Is Key to Federal Data Center Overhaul
December 17, 2012
InformationWeek Government
Closing data centers is only half the battle in the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative. The other equally important challenge is overhauling the data centers that remain to handle heavier workloads, and do so more efficiently and at lower cost than today's facilities.
