The Telework Solution, in conjunction with Sacramento State University, is holding a one-day event called the Work Anywhere Symposium 2011 in Sacramento, California on September 22, 2011 geared for federal, state and local government decision-makers interested in exploring the benefits and cost savings associated with implementing a formal telework program.

A study by Booz Allen showed that if half the workforce worked from home just one day a week, office space facility costs would be reduced by at least 10 percent. In the State of California that equates to $45 million, yet it is estimated that only 6,000 of California’s nearly 240,000 state employees telework regularly. An estimated 1.35 billion gallons of gasoline could be conserved annually if every U.S. worker with the ability to telework did so 1.6 days per week, according to an American Electronics Association report. In addition to reducing fuel consumption, telework programs relieve traffic congestion and reduce air pollution, carbon emissions and office-based energy usage.

The Work Anywhere Symposium’s goal is to provide an educational forum for agency directors, security officers, information technology directors, finance officers, human resource managers and others interested in laying the groundwork for government telework programs. Symposium presenters, headlined by keynote speaker Scott McNealy, founder and former CEO of Sun Microsystems, include noted telework experts from across the U.S. and Canada. Session topics will address a variety of telework concerns and considerations including building a telework business case, best practices and case studies, how to leverage technology securely and effectively and preparing the workforce for telework success. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren 16th Congressional District of California,, will also be joining the event via teleconference from Washington, D.C. to discuss the government’s commitment to teleworking.
The event, which will also include exhibitors and an end-of-day reception, is free of charge for government, education and non-profit organizations and $95 for all others. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit dedicated to helping injured service men and women.

The symposium will be held at the CSUS Alumni Center and Napa Hall, 3000 State University Drive East, Sacramento, CA 95819. For details about the schedule and to register for the event, go to http://www.cce.csus.edu/workanywhere2011.
